We’ve Created a Partnership with Select Medical for Our New Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Hospital

We have entered a joint venture with Select Medical to develop and operate a 50-bed inpatient physical rehabilitation hospital in Roanoke. Select Medical will own and manage the new hospital, to be called Carilion Rehabilitation Hospital. 

In collaboration with Select, we also completed a lease agreement with a developer to build the hospital on 9th Street, SE, in Roanoke at the Riverdale development.

“This new facility represents a significant investment in the future of inpatient rehabilitation services for our region,” said Mike Abbott, president of Carilion Medical Center. “By combining Select’s national expertise and resources in rehabilitation care with our strong clinical foundation and commitment to our community, we will be able to expand access to high-quality inpatient rehabilitation services close to home for more patients across our region.

Inpatient Rehabilitation physicians and APPs will remain Carilion employees while practicing in the new facility, and approximately 100 Carilion Inpatient Rehabilitation employees, including nurses and therapists, will have the opportunity to transition employment to the joint venture. 

Carilion Rehabilitation Hospital will include 34 medical rehabilitation beds relocated from CRCH as well as 16 new beds, for 50 beds in total. This represents a nearly 50% increase in access to expert inpatient rehabilitation services close to home for our communities. Inpatient Rehabilitation employees will continue to provide input about the building and the best ways to elevate patient care as hospital planning continues. 

The hospital builds on our system-wide work to meet increasing community need to expand access to care for patients who need help recovering from traumatic brain injuries, strokes, spinal cord damage, and other serious conditions. 

Construction will begin soon, and the new hospital is expected to open in spring/summer 2028.
