Updated: We're Planning a New Physical Rehabilitation Hospital

May 2024 Update: A Convenient Location and a Unique Local Partnership for our Proposed Hospital

We submitted the Certificate of Public Need (COPN) application on May 1 and are awaiting approval from the Commonwealth. In the meantime, we have proposed partnering with Riverdale Southeast, LLC, the Roanoke-based developers who are repurposing the industrial Riverdale property near our Carilion Medical Center campus.

Under the proposed plan, the developers would work with local businesses to finance and construct our new hospital on the western portion of the Riverdale property, then lease the facility to our organization. This unique arrangement will enable us to effectively steward our resources while responding to our patients' changing needs by providing them with the latest rehabilitation care in a new location that's still close to home.

The new 50-bed hospital would house 34 medical rehabilitation beds relocated from CRCH and 16 new beds. Additional hospital details and our plans for CRCH continue to be finalized.

The COPN process takes time, and we’ll share more details as they become available. If the process goes smoothly, the proposed hospital could open as early as late 2026.

April 2024 Announcement: We're Planning a New Inpatient Medical Rehabilitation Hospital

In April we submitted a Letter of Intent to the Commonwealth of Virginia seeking a COPN for an inpatient medical rehabilitation hospital in Roanoke. 

Currently, our inpatient rehabilitation unit at CRCH serves patients who need help recovering from strokes, traumatic injuries and a host of other ailments. With an aging population in our region, we have a demonstrated need for more medical rehabilitative services.

If the state approves our application, the 50-bed hospital would be established by relocating 34 medical rehabilitation beds from CRCH and adding 16 additional beds.

The proposed hospital will be built near Carilion Medical Center. Details about the plan, including our CRCH plans, are being finalized. 

The COPN process takes time, and we’ll keep you informed with additional details as they become available. If the process goes smoothly, the earliest the proposed hospital could open is 2026.
