Rewards of Research: Introduction and a Current Study
Our Rewards of Research series features physician researchers and other notable members of the medical community who are enthusiastic about the impact research has on finding better treatments and developing better recommendations for patients.
Some research may immediately benefit patients, but often patient participation is the foundation for future breakthroughs and recommendations—a gift to the future of medicine.

"I think research and patient participation is one of the biggest forms of community service that you can participate in. It’s so important that patients be aware that every single decision that’s being made in medicine is probably built on the research effort of others.”
—Maithili Chitnavis, M.D., Gastroenterologist researcher

"Most patients would not want the care that people received 20 years ago in heart conditions and brain injury; since that research was done, we have advanced care so much. Being part of the next answer or next discovery in medical innovation is critical to improvement of patient care for our community."
—Damon Kuehl, M.D., Emergency Medicine researcher
Look for Rewards of Research articles that examine how research impacts, and has the potential to impact, treatment options for patients. Below is one example of how research at Carilion is impacting patient recommendations after a common orthopaedic surgery.
Our Research and Development team strives to increase the quality and quantity of research projects.
There are currently over 300 active clinical research collaborations underway.
Many projects are with our academic partners, including Virginia Tech, Radford University Carilion and the University of Virginia.
