Keeping Our Workplace Safe: Essential Safety Measures to Remember

At Carilion, the safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors are our top priorities. As we continue to enhance our workplace safety measures, including the strengthening of our facilities with weapons detection and upcoming improvements to visitor management plans, we want to ensure that you are informed and aware of the resources available to help keep you safe. Recently, the AHA released a memo following an online rumor of a threat to hospitals in the United States. Carilion Police are aware and actively monitoring the situation. As a reminder, we have comprehensive safety measures in place. If you see something suspicious, please say something. Also, here are some resources and reminders to help you stay safe.

Being Proactive in Our Safety Efforts 

You play a critical role in maintaining a safe environment. From the parking lot to the hallways, your awareness and actions can help keep Carilion a secure place for everyone. Whether you're walking to and from parking areas, nearby buildings, or public transportation, Carilion Police and Security encourage you to stay alert and follow these precautions: 

• Stay Alert – Avoid distractions like looking at your phone or wearing headphones. Always be aware of your surroundings. 

• Walk in Well-Lit Areas – Use designated pedestrian paths and avoid isolated areas, especially after dark. 

• Walk with Others – If possible, walk with a colleague or in a group. There’s safety in numbers. 

• Trust Your Instincts – If something feels off, seek a safe location immediately and contact our department or 911. 

• Have Your Keys Ready – Before you reach your vehicle, have your keys in hand for a quick entry. 

• Report Suspicious Activity – If you see anything unusual, notify our department immediately. 

Security Escort Services 

For added peace of mind, our Police or Security Officers are available 24/7 for security escorts to and from your vehicle. If you feel unsafe walking alone, don’t hesitate to call 540-981-7911 to request an escort. Your safety is our priority. 

Strengthening Our Security Measures 

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, we are piloting several new programs, including weapons detection units and a visitor management system. These measures are being rolled out at CRMH and will be tested in the West and South lobby entrances, the Emergency Department Tower, and 4 North (Outpatient Surgery) later this spring. 

These new safety measures aim to enhance security and reduce the potential risks we face in our daily work. Additionally, metal-detecting wands have been in place in the Emergency Department at CRMH for the past few months, helping us keep our facilities weapons-free. The visitor management system will ensure all visitors over 18 are screened and given a badge to enhance our facility security. 

Your Role in Workplace Safety 

In healthcare, we often interact with patients who are experiencing vulnerability and stress. This can sometimes lead to difficult situations and, in extreme cases, workplace violence. In fact, healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than those in other industries. To help mitigate these risks, we are continuously evaluating our safety measures. 

Here are a few resources available to help keep you safe: 

• SafeWatch – If you witness or experience any form of violence—whether physical, verbal, or emotional—it’s important to report it through SafeWatch. Your reports help us identify potential risks and implement changes to keep everyone safe. 

• Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) – This trained team responds to patients who present safety concerns. They are equipped to de-escalate situations and provide support when things become volatile. 

• TRUST Team – The TRUST Team provides compassionate support for healthcare team members who experience the second victim phenomenon after an adverse event or security issue. Remember, it’s important to take care of yourself and your coworkers. 

• Chaplaincy Services – Our chaplains are available to provide spiritual guidance and support for both patient care and staff. 

• Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – Carilion offers up to five free counseling sessions each year with a licensed mental health professional. The EAP is a confidential resource for personal or job-related challenges.
