Elsevier Clinical Skills Replaces Cornerstone—Important Deadlines to Know
Clinical team members must complete a competency checklist in Cornerstone during orientation and annually to validate essential knowledge and skills required to effectively perform your job and provide high-quality patient care.
We are moving from Cornerstone to Elsevier Clinical Skills for better tracking and validation, and important changes are coming with this transition.
What to Do (Current Employees)
Complete Your Annual Competencies: All annual competencies must be completed by Monday, Sept. 15, 2025.
- Due to the transition, this deadline is 2 weeks earlier than in previous years.
- You may have assignments in both Cornerstone and Elsevier.
Note: Checklists or clinical skills must be completed in both systems by the deadline.
Know What’s Changing: After Sept. 15, Cornerstone will no longer be used for annual competency validation.
- Clinical staff will use Elsevier for the 2026 annual skills in January.
- Information on changes to non-clinical and leadership competencies will be available later.
Check Your Status and Get Help: There is no automatic reporting—you must log into Cornerstone to check your progress.
- Elsevier can be accessed via the Nursing Services hub or Epic toolbar.
- For assistance, submit a request through the HR E&OD Request Portal and select Elsevier Clinical Skills.
What to Do (Employees on Orientation)
If you are a new employee who will not complete orientation by Wednesday, Oct. 15, follow these steps:
- Download and save your in-progress orientation and post-orientation checklists from Cornerstone. Use this job aid to export your competency checklist history.
Note: New hire checklists will be assigned in Elsevier starting Monday, Oct. 6.
- Complete the in-progress orientation and post-orientation checklist through normal processes.
- Send the completed orientation checklist to the Education and Organizational Development email box at educationandorganizationaldevelopment@carilionclinic.org.
- Submit your orientation checklist to your leader to keep in your employee file.
For questions, submit a request through the HR E&OD Request Portal and select Elsevier Clinical Skills.
