Could You Be at Risk for Peripheral Artery Disease? Get Screened.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) happens when arteries in the legs become narrowed or blocked, reducing blood flow to the legs and feet. PAD can be difficult to recognize because many people have few or no symptoms. A free screening can help identify possible circulation concerns and determine whether you should follow up with a health care provider.

• Date: Saturday, Sept. 19
• Time: 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m,
• Location: Crystal Spring Medical Office Building, 2001 Crystal Spring Ave., Roanoke

No appointment, referral or preregistration is required. Just walk in!

Could you be at risk for PAD?

PAD becomes more common with age. Consider being screened if you:

• Are age 65 or older
• Are age 50 or older and have other risk factors
• Smoke or have smoked in the past
• Have diabetes
• Have high blood pressure
• Have high cholesterol
• Have a personal or family history of vascular disease, heart attack or stroke

Smoking and diabetes are especially significant risk factors for PAD.

Know the warning signs.

PAD does not always cause noticeable symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

• Leg pain, cramping, heaviness or tiredness while walking or exercising
• Symptoms that improve when you stop and rest
• Sores or wounds on the toes or feet that heal slowly or do not heal
• A lower leg or foot that feels colder than the other
• Foot or toe pain while resting

These symptoms may indicate reduced blood flow and should be discussed with a health care provider.

Don’t ignore changes in your legs or feet.
