Congratulations to Our 2025 Shine Award Recipients

We celebrated our Shine Awards during a ceremony on Monday, Nov. 10. Congratulations to the recipients of the 2025 Carilion Clinic Spark Awards, Quality Awards, Medical Excellence Awards, Values Awards and Nancy Howell Agee Award for Distinguished Service! And thank you to all of our employees for the hard work that you put into serving our patients and community each day.

Nancy Howell Agee Award for Distinguished Service

This award—formerly known as the President's Award—recognizes individuals for a career of extraordinary accomplishments. This year's recipients were:

  • Lee Jones, DMD, Chief of Dentistry.
  • Carolyn Wilson, Retail Food Operations. 

Spark Awards

The Spark Award recognizes individuals or teams who consistently provide that “spark” of innovation that carries our organization forward. They drive positive change to processes, tools and community in order to help our patients. Those who are recognized with this award innovate so often, they’re known for it.

  • Katherine Coffey-Vega, MD, Geriatric Medicine
  • Billy Schwartz, RN, Resource Pool Nursing

Medical Excellence Awards

These awards recognize physicians and APPs for their clinical skills, as well as their leadership and dedication to their patients, colleagues and communities.  

  • Award for Residents and Fellows: Lauren Hennis, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Award for Advanced Practice Providers: Sydney Garst, PA, Otolaryngology
  • Awards for Physicians, Podiatrists, Dentists and Oral Surgeons: Caleb Cutherell, MD, Surgery

Quality Awards

  • Community Distinction Award: Occupied Timer Reduction for Admissions out of the ED
  • Ambulatory Quality Award: Grow-Our-Own Medical Assistant-Certified Program
  • Excellence in Advancing Care Delivery Award: Increased Access to Care by Reduction in Capped Beds Due to Staffing
  • Enterprise Award: Turning the Tide on Mortality Outcomes
  • Hold the Gains Award: Internalizing Skilled Nursing Facility Authorizations and Reducing Avoidable Delay Days
  • MVP Award: Improving Sepsis Outcomes

Dr. Lauren Hennis received the Award for Residents and Fellows.
Sydney Garst, PA, received the Award for APPs.
Dr. Caleb Cutherell received the Award for Physicians.
The Brain Injury Center received the team Commitment Award.
Hannah Curtis received the individual Commitment Award.
Aaron Rivers received the individual Compassion Award.
The Patient K Team received the team Compassion Award.
Thw team Curiosity Award went to "Curiosity at the Doorstep: Investigating Impacts of Social Determinants of Health."
Individual Curiosity Awards were given to Dr. Tim Beirne and Amber Harris.
The Children’s Miracle Network Market Alignment team received the team Collaboration Award.
Brent Lorton won the individual Collaboration Award.
Sarah McCambridge, RN,  received the individual Courage Award. Her colleagues accepted the award on her behalf.
The Violent Injury Recovery and Support Program received the team Courage Award.
