Our Mission and What It Means to be a Nonprofit Health System

A message from President and CEO Nancy Howell Agee:

Carilion has changed a lot since I began my career as a nurse at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is my commitment to our mission: to improve the health of the communities we serve. 

We make decisions based on what our communities need, not what is most profitable. When we earn money, we put it back into Carilion and our communities instead of paying investors. I’m incredibly proud of the work we do. 

Yet even nonprofit organizations like ours must be financially sound to be sustainable. And, like health care organizations across the country, we are currently facing some financial challenges. 

I’d like to share a message with you about what it means to be a non-profit organization and some steps we are taking to ensure we remain financially secure and focused on our mission. Please watch the video above.

I have seen our organization weather financial challenges before. I have seen us work together to meet a common goal. I know we will do it again. I am counting on you!
