A Sense of Duty.........

  On Monday, April 11th 2022, as Carilion Police Officer Eric Smtih was headed to work at RMH, he came across a bad accident on US 460 in Bedford County.  As he approached, he knew that quick action was needed as the accident had just happened and several bystanders had stopped to see if they could render aid.  No law enforcement or rescue personnel were on scene at that time and a large diesel spill had accumulated under the truck making the situation dire and unstable as the driver was pinned in the truck.  Quickly, Officer Smith jumped into action, directing the community members on what to do, and more importantly,  not to do, to try and help the victim.  Sensing the danger, Officer Smith armed himself with a fire extinguisher to fight the flames if it were needed to protect the victims and others at the scene.  Thankfully, Moneta Fire and Rescue members arrived and began extrication of the victim.  Officer Smith's quick actions and great sense of duty were recognized by the bystanders and first responders in keeping an already bad situation from becoming worse.  Another example of Carilion PD's 24/7 commitment to the communities that we serve.  Hats off to Officer Smith for his job well done!
