Do You Have Questions About HIPAA?
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge.
We know you might have questions about HIPAA, and how it applies to your job or to you as a patient. Our Privacy team is producing an FAQ about HIPAA and wants to know your questions.
Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions our Privacy team receives:
Q: Can I access my own chart in Epic?
A: Yes, you may access your own chart for view-only purposes. You cannot modify, send in-basket messages or print from your own medical record.
Q: I am a Carilion employee, so why is Break the Glass not on my chart?
A: Break the Glass is applied when Carilion is listed as your employer in Epic. This is usually added when new employees are hired, but there are cases when it is not added. If Break the Glass is not on your chart, and you want to add it, contact your primary care provider or Carilion's Privacy office and ask to have it added.
Q: How do I contact the Privacy office?
A: You can contact the Privacy team by email at privacy@carilionclinic.org, by phone at 540-510-4600 or by calling the Integrity Help Line at 844-732-6232. You can also contact us through the Integrity reporting website at CarilionClinicIntegrity.org. Please note you will need to use Internet Explorer to access the reporting website.
What are your HIPAA questions? Submit them by Sept. 10 using this Microsoft Office form. Our Privacy team will randomly pick one person from those who submit questions to receive a $20 Amazon gift card.
When the HIPAA FAQ is complete, it will be shared on Inside Carilion.
