Carilion ECMO/ECLS Program Receives Silver Level ELSO AWARD

The Extacorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Award of Excellence was developed to recognize Extracorporeal Circulation Life Support (ECLS) Centers that utilize the ELSO Guidelines for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for training and education.  Additionally, the ECMO Program is reviewed for indicators in Quality, Value of Care and Benchmarking categories. It was first available for application in 2006. The levels Silver, Gold and Platinum were introduced in 2015.

The Carilion Clinic ECLS/ECMO Program applied for Silver Level status and was notified of the Silver Level ELSO  Award designation on July 15, 2021. 

• The Award demonstrates to the health care community:

  ✔ Assurance of high quality standards

  ✔ Specialized equipment and supplies

  ✔ Defined patient protocols, and

  ✔ Advanced education of all staff members

• The ELSO Award defines an integrated infrastructure that supports fundamental processes that produce a high performing ECLS/ECMO program.
