Carilion Hospitals Recognized by Vizient as Top Performers

Submitted by tcholland on

Two of our hospitals have been recognized as top performers in the 2026 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking by Vizient, the nation’s largest provider-driven healthcare performance improvement company.

Carilion Children's at CRMH was recognized in the Pediatric Hospital cohort, while CGCH was recognized as a top performer in the Critical Access Hospital cohort. The hospitals were recognized for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality care based on the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study.

Carilion Children's at CRMH was No. 2 out of 89 participating Vizient provider clients in the Pediatric Hospital cohort.

“Children and families come to us during some of the most difficult and vulnerable moments of their lives. They expect and deserve care that is expert, compassionate, safe and of the highest quality,” said Andrew Herman, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. “This recognition reflects our commitment to providing children safe passage through their care—something that requires extraordinary teamwork, dedication and attention to detail every day. It belongs to the physicians, nurses and many other team members who work together to provide exceptional care for children across our region, close to home"

CGCH was 16 out of 172 Vizient provider clients in the Critical Access Hospital cohort.

“This recognition reflects the commitment our teams bring to caring for this community every day,” said Kristie Williams, president of CGCH and CTCH. “Our teams demonstrate tremendous collaboration, expertise and attention to quality. To have Carilion Giles Community Hospital recognized among the nation’s Critical Access Hospitals is something our physicians, staff, leaders and the Board should be incredibly proud of.”

This year, 1,346 participating hospitals were segmented into 7 cohorts for the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. The study measures performance on the quality of patient care in six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and variation in care. The study factors in measures from the Vizient Clinical Data Base and includes performance data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey and the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network.

The Vizient Quality and Accountability Study helps participating hospitals and health systems understand their performance against their peers and identifies structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care activity. The recognition period is for work spanning July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026.
