On August 10, Jewel Wood, R.N. on 9 CST PCU, received the Outstanding Preceptor Award for April-June 2026. The award was presented by H.R. E&OD alongside Jewel's leadership team. In addition to caring for patients, a clinical preceptor Your nomination highlights the roles of a preceptor: an educator, coach, leader, influencer, facilitator, protector, and evaluator.

Jewel was nominated by a recent orientee, Cara Helbert. Jewel's nomination reads:

"During one of my last few weeks of orientation, I had a patient who was decompensating and demonstrating multiple signs of Sepsis. At the beginning of the shift, the patient had aspirated, spiked a high fever, and become disoriented with garbled speech. Jewel allowed me to talk through what I thought was going on and what I thought our steps should be. She validated my thought processes and talked through what else she was concerned about and would do. She supported me as I worked with the patient, messaged the provider, talked with clinical administration, and advocated for quick intervention.
Throughout my entire orientation, she took the time to discover how I learn best and how she could make my experience the best it could be. She supported me when I was advocating for patient needs that others did not agree with. She found time to talk through processes, medications, procedures, and treatment plans. She taught me how to handle difficult conversations and to always listen to my nursing intuition. I would be lucky to be half the nurse she is one day."

Jewel, thank you for your commitment not only to your patients, but to your Carilion Clinic family. Congratulations!!
