Meet Harmony Reed, RN Case Manager, Hospice

Tell us a little about yourself—your role, department and how long you've been with Carilion.
I'm Harmony Reed, a Hospice nurse. I've been a nurse for about 4 years. I started my career on a progressive care unit at CNRV, and I quickly realized that my favorite work was caring for patients receiving comfort care. I enjoyed being able to slow down, spend time with patients and families, and focus on making sure they were comfortable. That experience, along with growing up as a pastor's daughter and seeing families supported during difficult times, inspired me to pursue Hospice nursing.

Hospice care often comes during one of the most difficult times in a family's life. What does it mean to you to support patients and their loved ones during that journey?
It's my favorite part of the job. Being able to help someone transition peacefully and support their family through that process is incredibly meaningful. As much as you're there for the patient, you're there for their loved ones too. Helping families understand what's happening and making sure they feel supported is such an important part of hospice care.

A patient's spouse recently described you as "God's gift to Hospice." What goes through your mind when you hear something like that?
It's incredibly special to hear. Knowing that I've been able to make a difference in someone's life in such a short amount of time means the world to me. It motivates me to keep doing this work and continue caring for patients and families the best I can.

What are some ways hospice care brings comfort, dignity and peace to patients and families?
Hospice is about so much more than nursing care. We provide emotional, spiritual, and practical support through an entire team. Families can access Chaplaincy services, bereavement support, social work, music therapy and massage therapy. Being able to connect patients and families with those resources helps bring comfort and peace during a difficult time.

What have patients and families taught you through your work?
They've taught me the importance of compassion and meeting people where they are. Every patient and family experience this journey differently, and no two situations are the same. It's important to listen, adapt, and provide the support each family needs in that moment.

What's the most rewarding part of your work?
Knowing that I'm making a difference for patients and families. End-of-life care is a sacred time. Being able to help someone remain comfortable, surrounded by the people they love, and bring peace to both patients and families during that journey is incredibly rewarding.
