Understanding Recent Reports About Rural Hospitals

Submitted by abshaver on

You may have seen recent news coverage about a report that examined the financial health of rural hospitals across the state. The report identified several hospitals it considers at “higher risk,” including CGCH and CTCH.

While these reports highlight real challenges facing rural healthcare, they don't always tell the full story.

The most important takeaway—there are no plans to close our hospitals. Our focus remains on supporting our teams and communities as well as advocating for state and federal programs that make that work possible.

Looking Beyond the Headlines

Many studies like this rely heavily on publicly available financial documents. While those documents provide useful information, they cannot fully capture the complexity of delivering healthcare in rural communities or the benefits of being part of a larger health system.

That's a critical distinction.

As part of Carilion, our community hospitals are supported by shared resources, advanced technology, coordinated care teams, and system-wide expertise. These connections help us provide high-quality care locally while strengthening services across the region. No hospital stands alone.

The Reality of Rural Healthcare

Like nonprofit healthcare organizations across the country, we operate with tight margins while caring for our communities. Rural hospitals face heightened challenges, including workforce shortages, rising costs, and changes in healthcare reimbursement.

We continue to invest in and evolve our services, improve efficiency, and look for new ways to meet the needs of our patients and communities.

We are also actively working to address policy changes that could affect healthcare access in our region, including proposed changes to Medicaid.

Through advocacy efforts at both the state and federal levels, we are working to protect programs that help patients access care and support the long-term sustainability of rural healthcare services.

Staying Focused on Our Mission

These outside reports are not new, and our focus remains the same: providing exceptional care and improving the health of our communities.

As a locally owned, nonprofit health system, we are rooted in the communities we serve. Our integrated care model allows us to work together across the organization, giving us greater strength and flexibility as we navigate challenges affecting healthcare teams nationwide.

There are no plans to close hospitals, and we remain committed to supporting our teams, patients, and communities while navigating real challenges facing rural health providers nationwide.

Reports based primarily on financial filings do not capture the full value of being part of an integrated health system, where shared resources and expertise strengthen local care.

Through advocacy efforts, we are working to protect programs that help patients access care and support the long-term sustainability of services.
