Epic Updates: What You Need to Know

Submitted by kdberry on

What's New in Epic?

The May 13 Epic upgrade brought Epic Rover to CGCH and CTCH. Epic Rover gives bedside staff options for mobile documentation using their Carilion-provided device. We're planning to bring this tool to all hospitals in the coming months. Read more about Rover below.

We also introduced new data models within Epic's SlicerDicer tool. Read more about SlicerDicer below.

You can use Epic's "What's New" feature through June 10 to see what changed for you during the May upgrade. To see what's new--as well as recommended education based on your actual use of Epic--click the megaphone icon on your Epic Home workspace, or search in the assistant bar using a keyword like "what's new" or "upgrade." For more information, read our previous Inside Carilion article.

All About Epic Rover

Epic Rover is a secure mobile application for non-physician hospital employees, including nurses, respiratory therapists, and nursing assistants. It allows you to document and complete tasks directly from your Carilion-issued mobile device, reducing the need to rely solely on workstation carts.

Timeline

Home Health has already been using Epic Rover. With the May 13 upgrade, we made it available at CGCH and CTCH. In the coming months, we will introduce it at our other hospitals. This phased rollout allows teams to receive targeted support and adapt workflows effectively, rather than implementing the tool across all sites at once.

Benefits

With Epic Rover, you can:

  • Perform barcode medication administration
  • View and manage patient lists
  • Access and document in select flowsheets
  • Complete bedside documentation, such as behavioral health checks

Other benefits are:

  • Flexible use: Rover is not a required workflow. You may continue using traditional workstation carts or choose to use Rover on your Carilion mobile device based on your needs and preferences.
  • Improved efficiency: Mobile access enables quicker documentation and task completion at the bedside.

Device Requirements

Epic Rover is only approved for use on Carilion-issued mobile devices. Use on personal devices is not permitted. Most nursing staff already have access to approved devices; availability for other roles may vary.

Looking Ahead

Our rollout is initially focused on inpatient hospital workflows. We're exploring future enhancements, including ambient documentation capabilities that could allow nurses to verbally document assessments using mobile devices—similar to tools currently available to physicians.
