Earth Day, observed each year on April 22, is a global reminder of the importance of protecting our planet and preserving natural resources for future generations. At Carilion, this annual celebration reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and the health of the communities we serve. Throughout the month of April, we are proud to recognize Earth Day with a variety of activities and initiatives that highlight sustainability efforts across our organization.

Star City Compost Site Tour
Did you know that Carilion Clinic started composting inedible food in 2024? In one year, this program has diverted 69,456 pounds of food from local landfills! Join us for an opportunity to learn about where the food waste goes and how it is composted.

Wednesday, April 22
Tree Seedling Prep Day
As part of our Earth Day events, we will be distributing tree seedlings. Tree seedlings are obtained from the Virginia Department of Forestry but need to be prepared for distribution. We need help preparing the 600 tree seedlings! Volunteers will help wrap and sort the tree seedlings—no experience needed!

Thursday, April 23
CRMH Earth Day Fair
Stop by and learn about the many ways our organization promotes environmental health. Our Sustainability team will be on hand with free tree seedlings and other prizes, while supplies last, and other departments and vendors will have giveaways and information on environmental health.
Grab a Bingo card when you walk in and complete it for a chance to enter to win the grand raffle prize!

Friday, April 24
Clean Up Day
On Friday, April 24, go outside your office (or home office!) and participate in a Carilion-wide cleanup. Grab a trash bag and some gloves and walk around the area to pick up any trash you find.

- Participants at CRMH are welcome to join the Chaplain Feel Good Friday Walk. This group meets at 12:10 outside of the Discharge Lounge/Gift Shop at CRMH. The group will take a 30-minute leisurely walk (out and back) on the Greenway. Gloves and bags will be provided for participants to pick up litter while they walk!
