Critical Telephone Nursing
Anthony Aaron, an Orthopaedic Advice Line Nurse, navigated a call from a physical therapist reporting concerns about a patient cancelling their home health sessions twice in a row following a joint procedure. Hearing the concern, Anthony could tell right away this was more than just a patient being non-compliant with their therapy. Anthony took the step to call the patient and complete a thorough assessment.
The patient reported having fallen and had been taking their vital signs reporting a heart rate ranging from 30 bmp to 50 bpm. Anthony shared concerns with the patient that either the machine was not working correctly or there was a more serious medical concern. Anthony's genuine concern prompted the patient to take his advice and present to the ED.
The patient was diagnosed with a heart block and is now a proud owner of not only a new joint but a brand new pacemaker. Thank you Anthony for not just taking a concern and reporting it but taking that extra step that truly made a life changing difference.
