Tips for Decorating Your Workspace Safely

Submitted by csnaro on

The holiday season is here! If you plan to decorate your workspace, follow our Use of Decorations Policy to spread cheer safely.

Carilion-provided trees and lights are always approved. If you are planning to DIY, here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Traditional store-bought decorations, such as ornaments and beads, can be used. Please save any documentation that states items are flame retardant.
  • Decorations that could catch fire are not allowed. Some examples are live greenery, hay, paper decorations, garland made of telemetry paper, etc.
  • Battery-powered lights are okay. Plug-in decorations and open flames are not.
  • Decorations should not block exits or inhibit normal operations of the doors.
  • Decorations are not allowed on doors in patient care areas (including office doors) and may not be suspended from the ceiling.
  • Branches of the tree must be visible, so keep it simple. Excessive decoration is a fire risk.

Be creative and enjoy the holiday season with your co-workers safely!

Did you know that two in five deaths in space-heater fires involve portable electric space heaters?

As the weather gets colder, be sure you follow our Electrical Appliances Policy. Never leave a space heater unattended. Always plug it directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip or extension cord) and keep it at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.

Do NOT bring a space heater from home. There are areas in our facilities where space heaters are prohibited. Please contact Safety and Emergency Management to conduct a risk assessment if you feel your area needs a space heater.
