What You Need to Know About the 2025-2026 COVID-19 Vaccine

UPDATE, THURSDAY, SEPT. 11 (the below article has also been updated for accuracy): Per VDH, the 2025-26 COVID-19 vaccines are now available without a prescription at all retail pharmacies for those 18-64 with an underlying condition and anyone 65 and older. Where Can I Get the Vaccine?

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 10, COVID-19 vaccines for the 2025-2026 season will be available at all Carilion Clinic Retail Pharmacy locations without a prescription for certain groups under a system protocol (approved by physicians on our Vaccine Committee):

• Ages 12-64 with a qualifying condition
• Anyone 65 and older
• We are awaiting CDC guidance for children 6 months to 11 years of age. 

Also effective Sept. 10, COVID-19 prescriptions are now available at our primary care locations. We will also offer vaccines at those locations when supplies are in place in the coming weeks.

Effective Sept. 11, VDH has authorized all retail pharmacies to give COVID-19 vaccines without a prescription for those 18-64 with an underlying condition and anyone 65 and older as they await additional CDC guidance. Learn more about VDH COVID-19 Vaccine recommendations here. 

Does Insurance Cover the Vaccine?

Coverage for the COVID-19 vaccine depends upon your particular insurance. 

The COVID-19 vaccine helps protect you from severe illness, hospitalization and death. It is especially important if you are ages 65 and older, are at high risk for severe COVID-19 or have never received a COVID-19 vaccine.
