Submitted by tcholland on

Grant Greenberg, MD, has been hired as the new Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He will start in January.

Dr. Greenberg joins us from Lehigh Valley Health Network, where he served since 2016 as the Leonard Parker Pool Endowed Chair of Family Medicine. Over the past three years, he has also held the role of Chief Medical Executive for the Primary Care Service Line, overseeing Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, and Express Care.

Throughout his career, Dr. Greenberg has been a champion of academic excellence, clinical innovation, and equitable access to care. At LVHN, he led efforts to significantly expand the department’s academic footprint, supporting faculty development and scholarly engagement that culminated in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and presentations in the most recent fiscal year. He also grew the residency and fellowship programs, including the launch of a rural Family Medicine residency, and new fellowships in geriatrics, addiction medicine and operative obstetrics.

Innovation and health equity have been hallmarks of his leadership. He established a Vice Chair role focused on Innovation, Equity and Wellbeing, setting a model adopted by other departments.

Earlier in his career, he spent 16 years at the University of Michigan, where he served as Medical Director of the Chelsea Health Center, led system-wide clinical guideline development, and earned a master’s degree in health systems administration to strengthen his work in value-based care, informatics, and clinical operations. The University of Michigan is also where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees. Prior to enrolling at medical school, Dr. Greenberg received a master's degree in Ecology and Environmental Biology at Indiana University.

Grant is a national leader in Family Medicine and brings a collaborative spirit, a deep commitment to education and primary care and a proven ability to lead in both academic and community settings. Please join us in warmly welcoming him to Carilion and VTCSOM.
