New MyChart Features Expand Self-Service Options for Patients

Submitted by akbrelyn on

We’re making it easier than ever for patients to manage their care with MyChart, our secure online portal available 24/7 via app or website. Several new features are rolling out to improve convenience and reduce support needs.

Self-Sign Up for MyChart

Since July, patients 18 and older can now sign up for MyChart on their own. From our website, using secure third-party Experian technology, patients answer a few questions to verify their identity and receive an activation link by email or text. An activation code is granted for an instant MyChart account. This streamlined process is expected to reduce MyChart account activation requests and calls to Carilion Direct.

Fast Pass and Ticket Pass Now Available

When scheduling in MyChart, patients can opt into a waitlist called Fast Pass to receive automatic notifications of sooner appointment openings. Ticket Pass allows care teams to send immediate referral offers. Piloted in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatric Neurology in April, both features were made available across most service lines later in August. These features should reduce the number of unfilled appointment slots.

“As we expand access, we anticipate fewer rescheduling requests and follow-up calls to Carilion Direct. Patients will have more flexibility and control, getting notified automatically when earlier appointments become available,” said Paul Muddiman, Carilion Direct director.

MyChart eCheck-In Gains Momentum

By completing eCheck-In prior to visits, patients can confirm medications and allergies, sign documents electronically and provide copay details. This reduces wait time upon arrival.

“Fewer patients are waiting at the front desk, giving our team more time to focus on supporting patients,” said Valerie Dunford, Family Medicine regional director and Casadey Sager, healthcare administration assistant. Participation in eCheck-In continues to grow, helping operations run more smoothly.

Enhanced Patient Tools

Through MyChart, patients can now:

  • View their medical history
  • Request prescription refills
  • Complete Self-Registration
  • Book appointments
  • Set communication preferences—including text notifications
  • Join a waitlist for earlier appointments
  • Access assigned health education videos related to their care
  • And more!
