Recently Reported Scams: Be Alert

Phishing scams are always evolving, and we’ve recently seen two new types of scam attempts on campus. It is always important for our teams to be alert and know how to report anything suspicious.

Here are some of the latest phishing trends:

1. Flyer Scams in Parking Areas

We’ve received reports of fake DMV parking violation flyers on the windshields of parked vehicles. They direct victims to a website or address where payment is requested, feeding directly into a scam.

If you find a suspicious flyer:

• Do not scan QR codes or visit websites listed on the flyer. Do not provide payment or personal information.
• If you want to check to see if a ticket is real, contact your local DMV using information found on their official website.
• If this occurred on the Carilion campus, report the incident to Carilion Police & Security (540-981-7911).

2. Scam Calls to Patient Rooms

We’ve had reports of scam calls being made directly to patient rooms. Callers often try to extract personal, medical or payment information.

If you receive or hear of a suspicious call:

• Do not give out any personal or patient information. Do not follow any instructions from the caller.
• Try to remember as many details as possible such as what they asked for, the phone number, and any names used.
• Document the incident in SafeWatch.

General Scam Safety Tips:

• Never click suspicious links in texts, emails, or flyers.
• Never provide personal, financial, or patient information over the phone unless you're certain of the source.
• Stay alert and verify unusual requests, even if they sound official.
