Federal Agency Updates
For the past few decades, after a transition of Presidential power, Presidents have used Executive Orders (EOs) to quickly enact their policy agendas. Many of you are tracking the recent Executive Orders (EOs) that may have an impact on the way we deliver healthcare. Our legal team has also been monitoring the EOs and related developments closely, including seeking guidance from appropriate outside national counsel as needed.
In many cases, it’s too soon to tell exactly what the impacts will be, and we’re continuing to follow and assess them. As always, we’re committed to abiding by the law. We’ll keep you in the loop as we gain further clarity on the impact and timing of the EOs on the laws and regulations that govern our operations.
One recent area of focus for the White House is on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Per the Department of Homeland Security, ICE now has arresting authority in previously protected or “sensitive” areas, including hospitals. Just like when any law enforcement officer or representative from any enforcement agency presents her or himself at one of our facilities, our direction is for the Carilion employee involved to call Carilion Police dispatch at 540-981-7911 (77911) and let them know ICE is onsite. Carilion Police will ensure the appropriate documents are presented and appropriate legal processes are followed and will also have quick access to our legal team if any questions or issues arise.
At our core, we continue to live our Carilion values as we care for our patients and communities.
We are assessing recent executive orders related to healthcare.
