Today we honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this national holiday.

Dr. King was a transformative leader committed to racial equality and social justice. He envisioned a world where people are judged by their character, not skin color. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King promoted peaceful, nonviolent resistance—a cornerstone of the American civil rights movement.

His leadership in organizing peaceful protests, like the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington (where he delivered his iconic I Have a Dream speech), were instrumental in passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which helped to dismantle institutionalized segregation and protect the voting rights of African Americans.

Dr. King’s vision also extended to economic justice. He understood true freedom could not be achieved without equal access to economic opportunities and made his life’s mission to advocate for civil rights and provide resources to those in need through service and community.

That work laid the foundation for modern public health movements by highlighting the connection between social justice and health equity. Dr. King advocated for addressing poverty’s root causes, realizing they are significant factors in poor health outcomes, and called for expanded access to healthcare. His vision of health as a fundamental human right still shapes current policies prioritizing equity and access—and is at the heart of our mission.

Whether it’s caring for our patients or our fellow employees, or serving our community beyond our hospital walls, Dr. King’s message of love, unity, service and equity is woven into our values and influences our work to improve the health of the communities we serve every day.

Today as we honor Dr. King’s legacy to work towards a better world, think about your legacy. Share in the comments below how you are inspired to make a difference.
