Shoes4Hope Returns a Third Year to Fight Pediatric Cancer
We've teamed up for the third consecutive year with Virginia Tech Athletics and Shoes4Hope, an organization that inspires hope and helps our youngest cancer patients.
Together with their players, men's basketball head coach Mike Young and women's basketball head coach Megan Duffy invited 12 Pediatric hematology and Oncology patients and their family members to the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Center to design and paint sneakers. These "shoes for hope" will become unique sports mementos once the coaches wear them at their games in Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg next month.
Coaches vs. Cancer is an annual nationwide effort of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society. The program features collegiate basketball coaches and staff members wearing decorated sneakers at designated games to raise cancer awareness.
After the games, the sneakers will be given to patients. Funds will be raised for the Carilion Foundation to help all patients—including children like the boys and girls who participated in Shoes4Hope— access world-class care close to home.
