Streamlining Psychiatric Evaluation and Care with New Epic Consult Order

Submitted by akbrelyn on

Effective January 7, Carilion Mental Health is streamlining Epic orders to enhance efficiency and improve care coordination. A new consolidated Epic order, CON219 – Consult to Emergency Psychiatry, will replace the following existing orders:

  • CON93 – Consult to Connect for Assessment
  • CON500 – Consult to CPEP (ED USE ONLY)

CON94 – Consult to Connect Chemical Dependency will not be included in CON219. Instead, it will transition to a separate order, CON53 – Consult to Psychiatry MD for Evaluation.

Benefits of the Update

The consolidation aims to simplify the referral process, enabling care teams to effectively direct patients to appropriate mental health services. Key benefits include:

  • Enhanced workflow efficiency: Reduced administrative tasks allow providers to focus more on patient care.
  • Improved care coordination: Standardized referrals reduce confusion and ensure patients receive timely evaluations.
  • Fewer treatment delays: A streamlined process helps address urgent mental health needs more quickly.

CON219 will encompass services such as emergency psychiatric evaluations, care planning, and more, all tailored to meet individual patient needs.

For questions or additional guidance on using the new Epic order, care teams can refer to the training materials available in the Epic Learning Home Dashboard or contact Lisa Dishner, senior director Carilion Mental Health, at lmdishner@carilionclinic.org.
