Getting to Know Morgan Witt

Carilion Police Officer Morgan Witt first started with Carilion in October 2022 as a security officer with the goal of becoming a police officer. In November, she graduated from the Cardinal Criminal Justice police academy, inspired by her mother who also started with Carilion as a security officer and now is a deputy. During Officer Witt's time at the academy, she took a two-hour course on emergency delivery of a baby. She and her fellow officers never thought they would need to put these skills into practice. 

On June 21, 2024, Officer Witt used her skills to save a life in front of CRMH! She was patrolling the parking lot when she noticed a father and nurse frantically waving her down. As she approached the vehicle, she could see the mother was in labor with the baby's head visible, upside down and not breathing. She was able to comfort the mother while successfully delivering the child and helping it breath again. That day she was presented with The Life Saving Award, the highest award given by our police department, by Chief Ed Watkins. In addition, she was given a Challenge Coin from Carilion that she later presented to the baby and its family. 

Morgan states, "Keeping our staff safe and protected is my top priority." Her favorite thing about being a police officer at Carilion is her coworkers. She gave a special shoutout to Sergeant Crotts and Officer Fitzgerald, and encourages other first responders to brush up on skills in case this situation ever happens to them. Morgan says, "Stay calm, and if it comes down to it, use your best judgement."
