Epic Update: We're Adopting a New Backup System

Cyber-attacks and data breaches are a real threat to health care organizations like ours.  A threat can cause disruptions in access to software we use daily. Epic has taken steps to ensure health care organizations can still access a “view only” copy of their production environments during technology disruptions. This is called Epic Hosting Read Only (HRO).

HRO is different than our current view only environment as it is hosted by Epic rather than Carilion and is accessed securely via web URL link rather than desktop or Citrix application. 

About Epic HRO 

• It’s a near real-time copy of our Epic production environment that is stored securely in the cloud. 

• It lets you use Epic even if the Carilion network and systems are offline.

• It’s separate from the read-only Business Continuity reports that are accessible on BCA devices. 

• To access Epic HRO you will need to use two-factor authentication (2FA) that is separate from the Imprivata MFA program we use for other Carilion applications. 

What’s next: 

• Beginning Wednesday, July 24, after logging into Epic you’ll be prompted to enroll in 2FA using an authenticator app on your mobile device. 

• The prompt will appear each time you log in until enrollment is complete. 

• A job aid is available to help you sign up.
