Vice President Shirley Holland To Retire

With much appreciation for her years of service, join us in congratulating Vice President of Community Health and Development Shirley Holland on her upcoming retirement on Aug. 9.

Shirley has been with Carilion since the mid-1980s and led the development of the Carilion brand, many prominent programs and our community health investments. She joined us to work in Marketing and Communications and was named vice president of the department in 1994, later becoming vice president of Strategic Development in 2006. During this time, Shirley helped transition Carilion to the clinic model and positioned us as the preference and awareness leader in the market. Our community knows and trusts the name Carilion, in part, because of efforts she led.

In 2016, Shirley was named vice president of Community Health and Planning, leading Carilion’s pivotal role in assessing the community’s health, developing health improvement plans, building community relationships, forming new partnerships and coalitions like Healthy Roanoke Valley and managing community grants and sponsorships. Under her leadership, we instituted new population health efforts creating programs to improve access to mental and behavioral health services, including peer recovery specialists and community health workers.

She teamed with our Cardiovascular department to create HeartNet of the Virginias, which became a successful cardiac referral and transfer program. She was also integral to our growing presence at Westlake, the creation of the Healing Arts program and our centralized contact/scheduling center (Carilion Direct).

"Her work went far beyond Carilion’s walls and expanded our mission of improving health in the community," said Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Jeanne Armentrout. "She worked with community partners to found the LIFT Center at Fallon Park, was integral to Carilion’s investment in Melrose Plaza (opening in 2025) and assisted with the development of a new treatment facility for pregnant women with substance use disorder (The Grove on Patterson to open in 2025)."
