Important Safety Tips for Summer and Always

With 90-degree and above temperatures expected over the next week, it's important to stay safe.

Here are some tips from FEMA to keep in mind:

• Never leave people or pets in a closed car on a warm day.
• If air conditioning is unavailable in your home, go to a cooling center.
• Take cool showers or baths.
• Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Use your oven less to help reduce the temperature in your home.
• If you are outside, find shade. Wear a hat wide enough to protect your face. 
• Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
• Avoid high-energy activities or work outdoors during midday heat, if possible.
• Check on family members, older adults and neighbors.
• If your pet is outside, ensure they have plenty of cool water and access to shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot and can injure your pet’s feet.

Situational Awareness

• Always be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert and avoid distractions such as using your phone while walking or navigating busy areas.
• Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Take precautions or move to a safer location if necessary.

 Secure Your Vehicle

• Always lock your vehicle, even if you are stepping away for just a few moments.
• Ensure that windows are rolled up and valuables are either removed from the vehicle or kept out of sight.
• Park in well-lit, busy areas whenever possible. 

Walk in Pairs

• Whenever possible, walk with a companion, especially during evening or early morning hours. There is safety in numbers.
• If you are unable to find a walking partner, remember that our police and security team offers escorts to and from your vehicle. Do not hesitate to use this service to ensure your safety. 

If You See Something, Say Something

• Report any suspicious activity to our police or security personnel immediately. Your vigilance can make a significant difference.
• Do not approach suspicious individuals or situations. Instead, observe from a safe distance and provide detailed information to our police and security force.
