Carilion employees and their families can now use the Carilion Now app for access to mental health care, anytime.

Online visits continue to offer a great option when you need care quickly. In 2021, we launched access to 24/7 urgent care through the Carilion Now app. Carilion providers partner with Amwell Telemedicine Technology Service to offer urgent care anytime through the mobile app or website, CarilionNow.com. Currently, over 7,000 people have enrolled in Carilion Now and we’ve completed nearly 5,000 urgent care visits.

Mental Health Care

The Carilion Now app now offers mental health care access exclusively for Carilion employees and their families. Options for care include psychiatry and therapy. For psychiatry, licensed and board-certified psychiatrists offers medication management services for anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, depression, insomnia, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic attacks, general or social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc. Therapy, provided by licensed and board-certified psychologists, therapists, social workers and counselors, offers virtual counseling for anxiety, depression, stress management, LGBTQ counseling, grief, couples therapy, life transition and more.

Initial visits are 45 minutes. Following visits can be scheduled for 15, 30 or 45 minutes.

“We’re pleased to offer an additional option for online mental health care to Carilion employees and their families,” said Steve Morgan, chief medical information officer. “Using Amwell providers through the Carilion Now app, we can expand access to 24/7 scheduled psychiatry and therapy visits online as we continue to see patients in our facilities.”

Here’s how it works:

1. Download the Carilion Now app or log into CarilionNow.com.
2. Once you complete your profile, confirm if the visit is for yourself or a dependent.
3. Fill in the reason for the visit.
4. Complete your medical history and select the pharmacy of your choice. Selections will repopulate for future visits.
5. If applicable, enter your Carilion Employee Aetna Plan number and complete payment.
6. Enter the exclusive service code for mental health services: MH24
7. See a list of available providers and read their bios before selecting.
8. Select the date and time that matches your availability.
9. Once time for your visit, login and briefly wait in the waiting room until your provider is ready for the visit. You can even enter your phone number to receive a text upon provider availability.
10. Complete the visit and receive a summary by email or MyChart immediately following the visit.
11. Prescriptions, if necessary, will automatically be sent to your pharmacy.

Cost

And as an employee using Carilion’s benefits through Aetna, on-demand virtual visits start at just $20. The same services will be available to the community starting later at the following rates:

• Therapy 45 minutes, $96-122, based on provider credentials
• Psychiatry ~15 minutes, $98
• Psychiatry ~30 minutes, $145
• Psychiatry ~45 minutes, $263

“Discussions with your mental health provider remain confidential,” said Robert Trestman, Ph.D., M.D., chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. “As with any specialty service, medications are captured in Epic to reduce any adverse reactions to multiple prescriptions and ensure safe, continuity of care.”
