The Return of our Pediatric Memorial Service

On June 8, Pediatric Palliative Care held a memorial service dedicated to families within our system who have experienced the loss an infant or child. This marks a significant return after being unable to offer it for several years and they were excited to reintroduce this important service.  

Families joined staff from Child Life, the Healing Arts Program, Hospice, and Chaplaincy Services at Mill Mountain Park.  

The atmosphere was one of shared understanding and solidarity as families participated in meaningful activities including art projects, musical performances, heartfelt tributes and a butterfly release. 

The profound importance of communal support and acknowledgment after loss cannot be overstated. Violet Borowicz, M.D., in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, said: 

"Our annual memorial service is extremely important for grieving families. The loss of a child spans the rest of a family’s lifetime—it's a sorrow which never goes away. Our ability to give families a place to come together, grieve collectively and know their child will never be forgotten by those who loved and cared for them is one way we can honor them. I hope the families we've cared for over the years know the honor and privilege we feel in being allowed to take care of their children. I hope the families also know their children have impacted us and stay with us every day. If we can provide even a small fleeting moment of comfort in their earth-shattering grief, then we have done our job well."
