Growing Our Own Talent: New Limited Radiologic Technologist Program

We have a new paid Limited Radiologic Technologist (LRT) program that could benefit you and will help us staff needed positions. And as employees, we want you to be the first to know and have the earliest opportunity to apply!

How the Program Works

Any employee qualified to be a radiologic technologist assistant (RTA) can apply. Those selected will work as RTAs for Carilion while they complete the nine-week training program that teaches them the knowledge, skills and behaviors needed to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists exam.

The program starts June 3, with the exam and graduation in August. Graduates will continue to work as RTAs for several months until they receive their LRT license and will be eligible for promotion into an LRT role for our organization.

We are currently accepting employee applications to fill inpatient RTA positions. Soon, applicants outside Carilion will also be able to apply to fill a mix of inpatient and outpatient roles. The training is the same for all posted roles; however, the pay and environment where you work can differ.

The new LRT program is just one of our many Grow Our Own Talent programs available to help you get additional training and education to advance in your career here at Carilion.

“We have tremendous talent within our system and we have many positions that need to be filled,” says Tara Wiedeman, Human Resources senior director. “Building our future workforce from within helps us retain the invaluable knowledge and experience our employees offer while giving them a chance to broaden their horizons here.”

Our programs may provide further training and hands-on experience to help you in your current field or give you an opportunity to seek another healthcare role. There’s also variety in our programs and how they work.

Paid Jobs With Training

Like the RTA program, some of our programs are paid jobs with training that are open to our employees first, and then community members can apply. 

For example, our Emergency Medical Technician program, recently featured on WDBJ7’s Hometown Jobs, pays our ambulance support associates to complete the 16-week program while they train to become EMTs.

Community Partnerships

Other programs are partnerships with community organizations or schools.

Our two-year Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program, for example, is a partnership with Roanoke County Public Schools and Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center. It gives qualified high school students the opportunity to graduate with their CNA and work in healthcare while pursuing additional educational goals.

"If you're interested in further training in your field or are considering another healthcare role, it's important to regularly check our Grow Our Own Talent hub," says Katy Thompson, a senior HR consultant who works with internal departments and community partners to coordinate Grow Our Own Talent programs.

"We have new cohorts starting and more programs planned," she said. Those include:

• May: A new CNA cohort
• June: A new EMT cohort
• Summer: A new Pharmacy Technician cohort
• Fall: A Medical Assistant certified program in partnership with Virginia Western Community College
• On the horizon: A Building Maintenance program
