Don’t Miss Research Day April 9
If you are interested in the broad range of research projects our staff, faculty, residents, fellows and students are leading, you won’t want to miss this year’s Research Day.
More than 100 abstracts were submitted this year—nearly a quarter more than last year’s 77 submissions.
“The increase in abstract submissions this year reflects the trends seen in the department of Research and Development,” said Francis Farrell, R&D’s senior director.
The department reviewed over 200 research applications in 2023, including 35 new sponsored clinical trials led by 20 Carilion Clinic principal investigators. We currently have 130 active trials ongoing, with 900 participants involved.
Our internal Research Acceleration Program has also grown and become a vital part of our organization’s commitment to research and innovation.
“Support for internal research projects has been continuous for 18 rounds of funding, including over $200,000 awarded for the latest cycle,” said Farrell. “The evolving and growing research enterprise could not be achieved without the support of executive leadership.”
Our Department of Innovation, created in 2020, and the recent creation of an Inpatient Clinical Research Unit further supplement R&D’s work.
“Our research enterprise is built upon the contributions of our employees and their collaborations with our partners,” said Dr. Farrell. “I hope that you find time to view and engage with your colleagues at Research Day.”

Posters will be on display in the 6th floor auditorium at CRMH throughout the day on April 9.
Research from residents and fellows will be featured in the morning, and student, faculty and staff research will be featured in the afternoon.
