Earth Week 2024
Earth Day is Monday, April 22 and we will be having events all week to celebrate! Review the information below to learn about the different events and if you're able, consider volunteering!
Earth Day Fair
Interested in volunteering? We need help making this happen! There are a variety of ways you can be involved. Click here to learn about the different volunteer opportunities and to sign up.
When: Monday, April 22, 6:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Where: Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital
What: Stop by and learn about how Carilion is promoting environmental health in various areas. Event will include:
- Carilion’s Sustainability department – games and prizes, information on how to get involved, results of Carilion’s first system-wide greenhouse gas accounting, and FREE tree seedlings (while supplies last).
- River Acceptance – drop off SMALL electronics to be safely and securely recycled! Only these items will be accepted: cell phones, tablets, laptops, and cables. Any other items will not be accepted at this event, but you can stop by to learn how items can be dropped off at THE River Acceptance’s facility.
- Stryker Sustainability – information on one of Carilion’s single-use device reprocessing programs
- Stericycle – education on proper disposal of regulated medical waste, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste
- Community Health and Outreach – Heat Ready Roanoke grant materials and information, Morningside Urban Farm information
- Carilion’s Life Safety department – learn about how space heaters reduce energy efficiency and how to properly control the temperature in your office
Interested in attending the CRMH event from another Roanoke facility? Consider using the Carilion Clinic Employee Shuttle or the Star Line Trolley! This further supports our sustainability efforts by reducing emissions from passenger vehicles.
- The shuttle runs 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with stops at Riverside 3, CRMH, Crystal Springs, and ION. You can also call the shuttle to request a pickup at 540-529-1220.
- The Star Trolley runs from 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and stops at these locations.

Sustainability Bingo
When: Anytime between now and April 28!
Where: Anywhere
What: Complete the Earth Day Bingo card! Mark your card when you complete an item. When you have 5 squares covered in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) you’re done! Send a photo of your completed card and a photo of you completing one of the items to mcsotelo@carilionclinic.org to be entered to win a prize!
Composting Food Waste
When: Monday, April 22, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Where: Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Mountain View Café
What: Cafeteria visitors will have the option to compost any excess food waste in our cafeteria. A Sustainability Champion will be there to educate on proper disposal.
Piedmont Park Tree Planting
When: Wednesday, April 24, 4:30 – 5:15 p.m.
Where: Piedmont Park, 102 Riverview Blvd SE, Roanoke, VA 24014
What: In partnership with the City of Roanoke Urban Forestry Program, at this event attendees will plant trees at Piedmont Park. Event is limited to 10 participants and registration is required. Register here.
Sustainability Hero Award Winners Announcement
When: Thursday, April 25, noon
Where: Wow Wall
What: Winners of our Sustainability Hero Awards will be announced via a Wow Wall post on April 25. Be on the lookout for this post to read about our winners and their award-winning sustainability efforts.
Campus Cleanup
When: Friday, April 26, 12-1 p.m. (CRMH) or anytime
Where: Anywhere
What: On Friday, April 26 go outside your office (or home office!) and participate in a Carilion-wide clean up. Grab a trash bag and some gloves (either gardening or medical exam gloves) and walk around the area to pick up any trash you find. Send a picture of your efforts to mcsotelo@carilionclinic.org to be entered into a drawing for a prize! If you cannot participate in the specified time frame, send us a picture of your efforts at any other point during the week to enter! For participants at CRMH, meet at the pedestrian bridge between the hospital and Riverwalk Parking Garage and supplies will be provided.
