Shoes4Hope Sneakers Help Raise Pediatric Cancer Awareness

Submitted by pslarkin on

Spectators at two recent Virginia Tech basketball games enjoyed the competition on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseumand learned about our work to care for pediatric cancer patients.

What did it take to inform the crowd? Just our youngest patients and Hokies basketball players using their creativity to turn white sneakers into miniature works of art.

Shoes4Hope Partnership

This is the second consecutive year we have teamed with Virginia Tech Athletics and Shoes4Hopean organization that inspires hope by supporting our pediatric cancer patients. Together, we decorate sneakers for Virginia Tech Men's and Women's Basketball coaches to wear on the sidelines of dedicated home games.

The men’s coaches and staff wore their sneakers in the Jan. 13 home game against Miami. The women's basketball coaches and staff followed up by wearing them at the Jan. 21 home game against N.C. State.

Pediatric Hematology and Oncology patients, their family members and our Carilion Children’s staff enjoyed behind-the scenes tours of the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Centerreconnected with their partner coaches and players from December's sneaker-painting day and were introduced during in-game breaks.

The special sneaker-wearing coincided with this season’s National Association of Basketball Coaches and American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer games to promote cancer awareness.

Shoes4Hope Auction

Following the games, the sneakers went to auction to raise funds for Children's Hematology and Oncology. Every dollar raised supports the work our doctors, nurses and staff do every day to help youngsters fight and beat cancer.
