CMC Achieves Magnet Recognition for Amazing Fifth Time!

A high five is in order here! A lot of them.

For the fifth time, Carilion Medical Center (CRMH, CRCH and associated departments of our Roanoke Campus) has achieved Magnet® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Of the 28 hospitals in Virginia with the Magnet designation, CMC is the only one with five years of recognition. And only 1% of Magnet hospitals across the nation have four or more.

On Thursday, Jan. 18, many of our nursing staff members and leaders gathered in the 1 south boardroom at CRMH to receive the news from the ANCC via video call. 

“If this does not show how excellent our nurses are here at CMC—and honestly, across our system—I’m not sure what does,” said Pam Lindsey, the director of our Magnet program. “Five straight designations is a rare accomplishment across our nation. And we have it right here at Carilion.

Magnet recognition is the highest honor an organization can receive for nursing services; it is the gold standard for nursing programs. CMC first achieved Magnet recognition in 2003, then again in 2009, 2013 and 2018.

“When I became CNO less than a year ago, I was so impressed with our nursing services at every hospital and every location. I knew how great our nurses were,” said Tami Frost. “Our nurses never quit; they never stop wanting to achieve excellence.”

Achieving—then repeatedly reaffirming—this designation was only made possible through the hard work, supportive leadership, persistence and teamwork of everyone at CMC.
