Our Financial Assistance Policy Has Been Updated

Our mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve. As a tax-exempt organization, we care for our patients regardless of their ability to pay.

We have a Financial Assistance Policy that outlines which patients are eligible for assistance and the process we follow. Generally, patients are eligible for some form of assistance if their family income is at or below 500 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

Changes for FY24

Each year we review the policy and make changes. We make changes based on our organization's needs, our communities' needs and feedback from employees and patients. The following changes went into effect Oct. 1, 2023:

• Income limits have increased to reflect the federal poverty guidelines.
• The discount for patients who qualify for partial financial assistance increased. 
• Financial assistance is available for eligible patients seen at VelocityCare.
• Some patients who do not meet the Financial Assistance Policy criteria may be eligible for partial financial assistance under Carilion’s Catastrophic Coverage program.

Under the Catastrophic Coverage program, partial financial assistance is available if a patient’s financial responsibility for covered services provided by Carilion (including Carilion dental and transportation services) is greater than 20% of total annual family income plus total available assets. 

What You Need to Do

When appropriate, let your patients know that we offer financial assistance.
