Employees retiring after five continuous years of full – or- part-time employment receive an email at their Carilion Clinic email address, directing them to the online retirement gift catalog, where they may choose a gift.  Selection varies according to years of service.  In addition, Carilion provides $20 per year of credited service, up to $500, for retirement recognition.

Our retirement recognition program gives retiring employees the following three options for how these funds may be used:

  •  A Celebration: A retiring employee needs to inform her manager if she chooses to have a celebration. It is the manager’s responsibility to plan a retirement celebration for an employee or appoint someone in the department to do so. Managers must contact HR to receive approval on allowable expenses for the retirement celebration.   For more information, contact Human Resources through the Employee Center.
  • A Donation to the United Way:  Carilion will make a donation on behalf of the retiring employee to the United Way to be used in supporting partner agencies throughout the region.  Since the donation is being made by Carilion, it is not tax-deductible to the employee.
  • A Donation to any 501(c)(3) in the area.
  • Carilion Clinic Foundation Funds: The Carilion Clinic Foundation establishes and maintains relationships that generate philanthropic support to enhance Carilion Clinic's ability to provide excellence in health care. The focus of the Foundation is to provide resources for Carilion Clinic equipment, programs, and services that otherwise would not be possible. The Foundation is committed to finding ways to promote our patients' good health and to enhance the patients' experience beyond their critical care. The Gift

Employees retiring from Carilion Clinic choose their own retirement gift from an online gift catalog. The employee should choose their gift prior to separating employment.  The gift will be shipped directly to the employees’ home unless they choose the Carilion rocking chair (must have 25 years or more of service).
