Architectural Firm Chosen for New Cancer Center

You may recall our CEO, Nancy Howell Agee, and her husband, the Honorable G. Steven Agee, donated $1 million toward building a new cancer center. Since that time, much work on the project has happened out of public view. While projects of this magnitude take time, it’s exciting to share where we are today. 

A group of stakeholders completed site visits to other cancer centers, and following a competitive selection process, the architectural design firm HDR was chosen. HDR has designed 90 cancer centers in 12 countries around the world. With a focus on innovative design, they are ready to plan and design a cancer center to meet the evolving care delivery needs. 

Earlier this month, our stakeholders, architects and engineers met for initial immersive design meetings. The purpose of these meetings was to fully integrate a multidisciplinary clinical team that will design the building layout. The vision includes prioritizing ease of access for all patients with clear and simple wayfinding, maximizing natural light and views of nature wherever possible and creating an environment conducive to multidisciplinary clinics and collaboration. The new cancer center will be located on the Riverside campus.

We are grateful to visionary donors from our community for their support. In addition, our employees contributed $161,242 to the cancer center fund in last year’s Carilion Cares, I Care employee giving campaign. An anonymous employee donor matched the employee donations and generously contributed additional funds to reach $496,023 toward the project.
