Welcome Our New Chief Physician Executive

Submitted by tcholland on

After an extensive national search, we’re excited to announce that Dr. Rawle “Tony” Seupaul has been hired as executive vice president and chief physician executive. He’ll begin his new role in December.

Dr. Seupaul comes to Carilion from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), where he was the executive associate dean for Clinical Affairs and the Stanley E. Reed endowed professor and chair of Emergency Medicine in the College of Medicine. He has held numerous clinical and academic leadership posts at UAMS, including chief clinical officer for UAMS Health, director of the Emergency Medicine service line, chief of staff and chair of the Hospital Medical Board.

As our chief physician executive (formerly known as the chief medical officer), Dr. Seupaul will oversee our physician group. In this role, he will focus on expanding access to care for patients in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina, as well as advancing research and education.

Dr. Seupaul is nationally recognized for his expertise in evidence-based medicine (EBM) education and the application of science to health care. He is an elected member of the board of directors of the Association of Academic Chairs for Emergency Medicine (AACEM) and is a fellow of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).

Dr. Seupaul graduated Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) from the Honors in Medical Education Program at Northwestern University in Chicago. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, where he also served as chief resident. He recently attained his master’s degree in health care delivery from Dartmouth College.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Tony to our team in a few months,” said Nancy Howell Agee, chief executive officer. “In the meantime, I’d like to extend hearty thanks to Dr. Dan Harrington, our interim chief medical officer, who on more than a few occasions over the course of his career has stepped in to support Carilion when we needed him most. We’re grateful he was willing to take on one last assignment before he retired. I know I speak for all of us when I say: Thank you, Dan; we couldn’t have done it without you!”
