Introduction
Carilion provides you with time away from work when an immediate family member dies. The bereavement policy covers full-time and regular part time employees. You may use up to three bereavement leave days.

You should request leave from your manager as soon as you are aware of the need.  Bereavement leave is separate from, and will not affect, your PTO.

Immediate family members are defined as individuals in the following relationship to the employee:

  • Spouse / Domestic Partner
  • Parent(s)
  • Spouse's / Domestic Partner’s parents.
  • Legal Guardian(s)
  • Sibling(s) (Brother or Sister)
  • Child
  • Child's Spouse / Child's Domestic Partner
  • Legal Dependent(s)
  • Grandchildren
  • Grandparent(s)
  • Brother or Sister In-Law (Spouse's / Domestic Partner's siblings or sibling's spouse)
  • *Step-relations listed above
