Death in the Family
When an immediate family member dies, Carilion provides you with time away from work. Full time and regular part time employees may use up to three bereavement leave days under our bereavement policy.
You should request leave from your manager as soon as you are aware of the need. Bereavement leave is separate from, and will not affect, your PTO. Learn more about Bereavement Leave.
If you are the primary policy holder, the death of a spouse, domestic partner or dependent qualifies you to make changes to your benefits without waiting until the next open enrollment period. This is called a qualifying event.
Here are benefits you may need to make changes to:
- Medical, dental and vision benefits
- Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
- Group supplemental life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
To make changes to your benefits:
- Log in to Workday.
- You have 31 days from the qualifying event date to make changes to your benefits.
Please note, in the above situation you can change your benefits coverage level for medical and dental benefits, but you cannot switch between plans. For example, you may change from Family to Employee Only, but you can’t switch from the Basic to Comprehensive Dental Plans. You will need to wait until Open Enrollment to make plan changes.

In the event of a death, you, your family, or your beneficiary should contact the HR Service Center as soon as possible through Employee Center. A benefit representative will assist you or your loved one in the process of filing a life claim.
The Making a Life Claim page offers more information on changes to make in the event of a death.
