Childcare

Carilion subsidizes 25 percent of your weekly cost of tuition at any HoneyTree location. HoneyTree offers:

• 10 locations throughout the Roanoke Valley.
• Hours from 6:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
• Infant and toddler care.
• Full-and half-day preschool programs.
• Before-and after-school programs serving more than 50 area schools.
• Summer camp.

Roanoke—Sick Child Care 

As a Carilion employee, you have access to the Sick Room at the Riverwalk HoneyTree to help you care for your mildly ill child when you need to work. Carilion subsidizes 100 percent of the cost, and you can use this benefit even if your child is not enrolled at HoneyTree for regular care.

• Available for children 6 months to 12 years old. 
• Hours from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you are scheduled to work later than 5:30 p.m., we can keep the Sick Room open until 7 p.m. as long as you make arrangements with the nurse on duty.
• Staffed by an L.P.N.
• After 6:30 a.m. the morning you need sick care, call Carilion Sick Child care at 540-519-8946. If you need to make a reservation after 5:30 p.m. or before 6:30 a.m., call CRMH at 540-981-7000 and ask the operator to page the staffing office, and they will return your call in a timely manner.
• If your child is taking a medication (prescription and/or over-the-counter) while using the sick room, please complete the medication authorization form, which is required in order for the LPN to be able to administer the necessary medication.  Bring this completed form to the nurse when you bring your child to the sick room.
• Please read the Guidelines (.pdf) and complete the Registration Form (.pdf) before using the sick child care room.

To help make sure the sick child care room is a safe and quiet place for your mildly ill child, we ask that you follow the guidelines developed when determining if sick child care is appropriate.

Appropriate Illnesses for the Sick Child Care Room:

• Ear Infection
• Sinus Infection
• Tonsillitis
• Fever 100.4 degrees or below
• Minor non-contagious health problems
• The following can utilize Sick Child Care room if they have been on medication/receiving treatment at least 24 hours: Pinkeye and Strep Throat

Too sick for the Sick Child Care Room:

• Fever at or over 100.5
• Respiratory infection, including symptoms of fever, cough, and runny nose
• Contagious Rash
• Actively having Diarrhea
• Actively vomiting
• Untreated Strep throat, Pinkeye, Chickenpox, measles, or mumps
• Any other contagious illness which could include lice, scabies, ringworm, or MRSA

If your child has symptoms of a contagious illness, he/she may be admitted with a note from his/her physician that indicates that he/she is no longer contagious.

Childcare is available in the New River Valley through Radford Early Learning Center.  Carilion subsidizes 25 percent of your weekly cost of tuition at Radford Early Learning Center. Contact Radford Early Learning Center at 540-838-2408.

There are tax implications for Carilion's childcare subsidies. The IRS allows up to $5,000 in employer-provided dependent care benefits per family per year to be excluded from taxable income. The HoneyTree subsidy amounts for both regular childcare and sick childcare are tracked and show on your pay stub quarterly.
