We welcome John A. Jane Jr., M.D., as the senior vice president and chair of the newly formed Department of Neurosurgery.

"Dr. Jane joins a strong neurosurgical team at Carilion," said interim chief medical officer Daniel Harrington, M.D. "We’re excited to continue expanding our program with such a capable leader."

Dr. Jane specializes in the treatment of pituitary tumors and minimally invasive techniques to the brain. He has written extensively on the treatments and outcomes after pituitary surgery and has earned a national and international reputation. Over the course of his career, he’s held many leadership positions including director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, director of pituitary surgery, outpatient medical director of Neurosurgery and residency program director. He has also served on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery and was president of the Neurosurgical Societies of the Virginias.

A Virginia native, Dr. Jane received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and attended medical school at the University of Virginia, where he also completed his general surgery internship and neurosurgical residency. He returned to UVA Health after a year of fellowship at the renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Neurosurgery is a medical specialty providing comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for adults and children suffering from diseases and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, spine and peripheral nerves. Our Neurosurgery program has been growing rapidly since its inception in 2003 and already maintains a comprehensive team of surgeons, residents and advanced clinical care practitioners. The team provides care at the Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences in Roanoke.

The new department, including nine neurosurgeons and additional advanced care providers, was created as demand for neurosurgical services has increased in the last few years. It is expected to grow and allow new opportunities for clinical trials with this new designation and leadership.

Join us in welcoming Dr. Jane!
