The Seven Facets of Your Well-being

Submitted by gsrader on

When we talk about well-being, most people think of physical wellness or health—but it is about far more than just the foods you eat or how often you move. Well-being actually has seven different parts! The following areas make up your total well-being:

  • Your physical health – the condition of your body, how it grows, feels and moves
  • Your mental health – your emotional and psychological state, how you handle stress and relate to others
  • Your financial health – measurement of your financial life including your spending, savings, debt, etc.
  • Your occupational health – balance of work and leisure and sense of personal satisfaction in your work
  • Your environmental health – interaction with nature and having an enjoyable personal living and work environment
  • Your social health – our ability to interact and form meaningful relationships with others
  • Your cultural health – appreciating a diversity of culture and experiences

Do you feel like your well-being is in good shape in each of these areas? Or are there one or more that you need to focus on to improve your overall well-being?

When one area of our well-being is out of balance, it can begin to affect other facets of our lives. Being out of balance could be because of stress, life events, relationships and many other things.

Take some time to think about each of the seven parts of well-being and how they are each at play in your life. If it helps, write down ideas on how to improve or maintain your mental health in regards to each different part. You can create goals for yourself that will help you improve your well-being—examples could be to get more steps each day, find a counselor to talk to, spending more time outdoors or learning about new and different topics.

Remember that well-being is a journey and it is different for each of us; what you need in order to have balance and harmony in your life will be different from what your friends, family and co-workers will need.
