40 Years of Level 1 Trauma Care

Submitted by ocwalker on

Carilion Clinic has always been at the forefront of medical care and innovation. It has led the region with advancements in research and education, enlightening a new generation of physicians and medical professionals. Since 1983, Carilion Clinic has been at the forefront in another area – caring for patients following traumatic injury. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) remains one of only six Level 1 Trauma Centers in the Commonwealth of Virginia equipped to care for the most severely injured individuals. With the next closest Level 1 center being 118 miles away, CRMH maintains a service area of over 20 counties throughout Southwest Virginia as well as areas of West Virginia and North Carolina.

CRMH is verified by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as providing the highest level of care available for injured patients. We complete this work with a comprehensive and organized care team consisting of trauma surgeons, advanced care practitioners, nursing professionals, and consulting physicians of various specialties, including (but not limited to) Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgeons, and Plastic Surgery. With the team-based approach and expertise of all our allied professionals, we are able to complete our mission of improving the health of the communities we serve.

As of May 2023, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is celebrating 40 Years of continued care and dedication to those severely injured and impacted by traumatic events. Over the last 40 years, we have seen the expansion of our service line to include increased research and education, the addition of several fellowship programs, and the verification of our Pediatric Program as one of only three Pediatric Trauma Centers in Virginia.

Trauma Services hosted a reception on National Trauma Survivors Day (May 17, 2023) to show appreciation and support for our patients, survivors, families, and of course the staff that make caring for these patients possible.
