Outstanding Preceptor Award

On February 14th, The Nursing Center of Excellence awarded the Outstanding Preceptor Award to Michael Sturgill, PCT on 10MPCU.  Leaders from the Nursing Center of Excellence presented him with the award alongside his team members and unit leaders. Alicia Williams, LPN, who submitted the nomination said that Michael "has been instrumental in being a wonderful preceptor to the staff at 10MPCU.  He has precepted about every shift going on for four years.  He maintained a positive attitude throughout a pandemic that brought staffing challenges and oftentimes was the only assistive staff on the unit, all the while having the patience and time management to ensure that new staff received a great orientation. The new staff looks up to him as a mentor, and all are so grateful for their time with Mike throughout his orientation.  He is a weekend bailor employee, and employees happily volunteer to work every weekend for the chance to train with him. He knows the policies, patient needs, and nurses’ needs and does his best to make others around him knowledgeable.  He has willingly assisted in training nurse externs and staff on other units despite often being stretched to cover large patient groups.  He ensures that new staff feels protected, and included in the unit, provides constructive feedback, and discusses the processes he teaches per policy.  He provides a human touch to each patient by ensuring each patient’s individual unique needs are met. I feel like this is a valuable characteristic that can’t typically be taught, but Mike manages to teach new employees that all the small things matter.  His characteristics mirror Carilion’s values in every way.  Forever grateful for the impact you make on our patient's and employees' experience. Your compassion is unmatched."  Michael's commitment and compassion toward not only his patients, but also to his Carilion Clinic family, deserves to be recognized and celebrated.  Congratulations!
