Magnet recognition is the highest honor an organization can receive for nursing services. CMC has achieved Magnet designation 5 times and is working toward a sixth designation.
Unit Highlighted: CRMH Emergency Department, ED Nursing Critical Skill Sessions
Description of the Work
The Emergency Department Education Committee created a Nursing Critical Care Skills Session from needs identified in a needs assessment filled out by staff. The class includes a deeper dive into knowledge needed to care for critically ill patient. With the help of the Simulation Center, where the class is held, nurses are able to practice critical care skills in a safe environment. The class includes skill such as arterial lines, continuous bladder management, external ventricular drain (EVD), adult and pediatric massive transfusion protocol (MTP), large bore IV placement and Zoll simulations. The Skill Session started as voluntary, becoming a required annual class for all ED nurses.

MAGNET CONNECTION
The ED Nursing Critical Care Skills Session was created out of a need found by the Emergency Department Education Committee. The ED Nursing Critical Care Skills Session exemplifies the Magnet Model component of Structural Empowerment. The ED Critical Care Skills Session was developed in response to a needs assessment, and ongoing nursing education assessments and implementation plans continue to strengthen nursing knowledge and improve patient outcomes.
